Millers Update May 10, 2009

The browns went into the upper Millers on Friday in the stretch below S. Royalston and at Rezendes Pool. The river is also roaring along at +700 cfs, so there you go. The lower C&R (Wendell Depot) is scheduled to receive it's browns this Friday. That spot is now flowing at +1500cfs and the smart money says it will not be flowing below 700cfs by the weekend. Try it if you like to live dangerously!! I've always felt that 450cfs is the starting point on this river for the wading flyfisher and I for one will wait for that level. Slinging weighted, large flies through swollen currents is not a game that I like to play if I don't have to. In the past when the Millers has gone UP I've headed to the Swift which has always been DOWN. The Swift is a mess this Spring, no longer the tailwater that we enjoy but a roaring raceway. That has forced me to go elsewhere like the small river that flows past our backyard. The Mill River is a small, clean flowing stream that comes out of the hills west of Williamsburg and flows through Northampton. It gets it's share of clonebows and powerbaiters and an occasional flyfisher. It rises like a rocket after a rain but drops quickly. It was fishable this morning and I had fun. The photo is of the Mill River from my backyard. Yup, I've tested new rods from our back deck!
It's easy to get discouraged with all the rain and high water but IT'S ONLY EARLY MAY!!!

Did they stock down stream of Rendenzes as well, or did they stop there?

Thanks for the great info found in these blogs. I look forward to reading them!

Marc,

Rezendes was the end of the trail without the rafts used for stocking. We did the same thing(all buckets) a few years ago and the browns did move downstream but float stocking is much better. Maybe the high water will move them around.

There is a post on the Millers River TU forum that says that big browns were float stocked last Friday from Orcutt Brook to Erving. Is that true or misinformation? Also, was the water level too high to float stock the Bearsden area?

Gerry,

I can't find that post anywhere on their forum. Their homepage states that the bearsden was stocked last Friday. The water level was not too high to float stock. The Harrison bros. of Harrison Anglers were booked up for that day and could not do the float stocking for TU. Actually, the higher the flow the better for float stocking, within reason.

My conversation with Ken Simmons of DFW is that the Orcutt to Erving stretch will be stocked with browns on the 15th with the Harrison Bros. doing the float stocking.

Oops! I was reading the post from last May! They don't have much traffic on the site do they?

Gerry,

You're right about that TU website. Next to nothing for traffic or interest. Three years ago it was rock'n but it seems to be adrift right now. Some are trying to jump start it. We will see.....

Oh, I see. I didn't realize that they weren't able to float stock it.
Is Rezendes pool the one right behind the house in the Bears den? I like fishing the water down stream of that pool.

Thanks. /marc
