Late Winter Or Early Spring On The Swift

One has to make hay while the sun shines or at least when the temperature is in the lower 40's and it's not snowing. I had the pipe section pretty much to myself for about two hours except for the last hour when I fished with two regulars, Art and Dan. The place "seemed" pretty dead until we were graced with the "hatchery hatch", the flush of old pellets and other things that flowed via the pipe. The place came alive with dozens of trout working the surface. This "hatch" resulted in zero fish. I took three before this event. Two on a red serendipity and a dark brown on a quill bodied nymph tied on a scud hook. I've had quill bodies on the brain for a month so catching this fish was fun.

I tried a new (for me, anyway) approach to fishing the "tree pool". I went in from the pipe side and worked my way down against the steep bank. It gave the fly a nice drift and I think that the trout were not expecting that presentation. It worked!!

15 more days until SPRING!!

Would that be astronomical spring? Or mud season?
Congrats on the trout landed. It sounds like the hook-and-cook crowd didn't get all the trout. Do you think they have released a few fresh fish, or are these leftovers from the fall stocking?

Gerry,

Good to hear from you.

All of my fish had been in the stream for some time. They looked great especially the brown. I'm sure they'll be stocking soon.

Are you up north yet?

The black text on the black background is a nice touch...

I need to break out my super-secret x-ray glasses...

Ken,
The serendipities you are using- bead head or no bead head?

Just curious if the fish are starting to rise and hit surface insects or if they are still hovering on the bottom?

Ken,
Still in Florida until early April.
Hopefully I'll be able to get some fishing in next week and post reports on my blog. Until then, keep the Swift River news flowing!

What "black text"? It's mostly white on black.

No beads on the serendipities.

They were not chasing surface insects. It will be warmer this weekend so maybe that will bring some surface action.

Ken,
For some reason- on both my browsers the comments area comes up all black and can't see the comments- I have to drag over them with my mouse to get the color to change.

Not sure why...
I don't have any override settings on my browser or any font tags...

Odd...

Thanks for the info. I may try to start heading out next week and see if I can get a couple trout to be fooled.

Thanks,

Eric

Ken,
I have the same problem as Eric - black on black text.

Ken,
Black on black happens when I click from the home page on the title link so all the comments show up with the article.
If I click comments from the home page, they come up as they have always - black on white. I like the new white on black format. Then again, I liked the other one as well. Both easily legible - the content is the best, as usual.

Good job on at the tree hole. As long as the water stays lower that approach will work.

I'll be there tomorrow with the anticipated crowds.

Woohoo.
It wasn't just me...

I like the new layout for the page Ken, just needs to be tweaked.

Good luck on the Swift- the weather looks like it is going to cooperate all weekend.
