The Millers - Now is the TIME!

Hit this river NOW!! The last two years have been crazy with flows that broken records over the last two Summers. But this dry April has gotten this river down below 500cfs which is PRIME as far as flows are concerned. The browns go in on the first two Fridays in May but the bows have provided plenty of sport. Even the hendricksons are getting into the act on the lower river.

Temperatures will be in the '80's this weekend. It should be great!!!!! See you there!!

The photo is from the Cable Pool on the lower Millers.

Anonymous,

The Cable Pool is in Erving near the village of Farley. It is one of many large pools that are in the lower river.

Adrian,

I may hit the EB tonight.

Ahh, I've always considered that the "diamond farm" pool. Funny how the same pools have different names to different people.

Btw, fished the orcutt bridge area and had decent success -- 4 bows landed in 1 hour. Also, the boxcar section in the center of erving has been producing well. Buggers have been the go-to fly for those early season bows.

Thanks for the reports on the Miller. I have never fished this river before, but the optimistic reports are compelling me to trek out there this weekend. I looked on Google map and noticed a bridge crossing the river just outside Farley on Bridge St. Is this where Cable/Diamond Farm Pool is? If so, how is the parking situation and any other recommendations on catch and release sections would be much appreciated.

I tried the Orcutt (or Holtshire) section last night.....no success for me(fly fishing) or another spinning rod fisherman there.
Curious what bugger has been producing. I am strictly catch & release.

Anonymous,

Most buggers will produce but I like black the best.

Which river is the hottest right now? I've heard a ton about the Farmington, Westfield, and now the Millers. There are so many places I can't chose where to go.

Ken did you end up hitting the EB? If so how was the fishing? Were probably going to hit the middle branch and maybe the Gorge section and below. Tight lines, a safe and fun weekend everyone!

Adrian,

Fished the EB for an hour this evening. The was a good spinner fall of hendricksons with a few Quill Gordons thrown in but no risers. I'll be on the Millers guiding on Sunday and fishing until evening.

Good luck!!

Anonymous,

The Farmington seems to be producing best but all should be in good condition this month.

Hey Ken,

I fished the Millers today with minimal luck. I fished from noon to 3-ish in Wendell below the trestle and above right under the road bridges. There were quite a few people there. Talked to one guy who was getting out when i was gearing up who said no luck. One other older fellow who had no luck. Two others were working below me, i didn't see them get anything. I had two fish on, both rainbows from below the road bridge. No hits below the trestle bridge. First fish came off the hook and second broke off. dropped down to 5x and didnt get any other takes. I think tried to find the bears den with no success. Ended up being a long drive across MA. Took 202 back to Amherst from Athol. Some nice scenery along that road.

Cluster - the funny thing about the Bear's Den is that the closer you get to it the more you think that you are lost.

I drove all the way up through Athol. I saw a place at one point that said "bears den" conservation area, but i hadn't seen the river in awhile. I pulled over and asked a guy near here and he said, "I have no idea where the millers river is, i think thats back near orange"... is it past (further east) than Athol on route 2a?

For Bears Den you will have to drive in from Gulf Road in the Royalston side of the river. Ken's Millers River Guide through this web page will guide you there and may other places on the river and well worth the $10 to down load it tow your computer. There is also a map of Bears Den available for a few dollars at Bruce's Browser in Uptown Athol.

Anybody have anything on the effect of the broken pipe affecting Boston and how that will affect the Quabbin ReserVoir and the Lower Swift?

I went out to Millers for the first time this past saturday. It is a fantastic river. I somehow found the Cable Pool and worked my way down below where the river splits by a large island. The water looked great, but nothing came to my fly. Great pocket waters, pools and riffles. I was very surprised I had no action at all. I ran into someone from the north shore and we fished it pretty hard, but nothing. After quick lunch, he showed me the Power Pool. The water was a bit high, but I did have pretty good luck there. I picked up three browns, two about 18"s and one a bit smaller at around 15". They were caught on 26 BWOs.

Overall, it was a good introduction to Millers.

Where is the power pool? Does it have good pocket water?

Anonymous,

Don't call it the "Power Pool". It's been called the Kempfield Pool for decades.

It's in the lower C&R at Wendell Depot and is about 300 yards downstream from the railroad trestle.
