Saturday Morning On The EB

The rain was supposed to hold off until mid day but 10am found a light drizzle turning into a light rain turning into a ........ You get the message.

8:45am found me at slant rock pool only because I was too lazy to work the section below the gate a half mile or so into this section. There is a stretch below the gate that has entered my dreams - deep, smooth, classic, but I chickened out. I'll pay for that with "could of, should of" dreams for the next week. Anyway, slant rock forgave me. Five 'bows came to the dry. The tail end of this pool will keep you awake at night. Classic dry fly water!!!!

Next stop was the Bliss Pool. Three more surfaced to take a large stone fly. I made the mistake of tying this #10 stone to a 5x tippet. Talk about a messed up tippet!! 4X brought three 'bows up in the fast water at the head of this pool.

I thought about this river as I cut vines and other invasive growth away from my deck over looking the Mill River this early afternoon. Maybe tonight.......

The above photo is an old photo. I didn't have my camera today. Sorry!!

I would think that 5x would work on that ultra clear water.

Ken

May I applaude you for a wonderful river and fishing blog.

I am new to fly fishing this year and have gained alot by reading this site and many others. Good work all round.

My question to you is.. I will be camping up at lake Denisson in a couple of weeks, What is the Millers river like up there? and would you have any tips on spots etc that could help!

Any help and advice would be much appreciated

Kind Regards
Dave

Dave,

The Bears Den section in S. Royalston is the closest trout water on the Millers near your camping spot. If I could change your mind on the camping selection I would suggest Erving State Park at Laural Lake. It's a great camping area, clean with a nice cold lake for swimming and fishing. It's also only 5 minutes from the Kempfield/Wendell Depot area which has the best fly fishing for trout on the Millers.

Thanks Ken

We will look at making a trip to Erving before the summer is out, looks good to me.

Thanks again and hopefully see you on the Millers one day.

Kind regards
Dave

Hey Ken,
Since I live close to the Quinnebaug, i end up fishing there a lot. Some times if i don't have the opportunity to fish, I'll at least check out the river (usually dawn or dusk)to see whats hatching. The stocked rainbows and browns usually survive well after bait people lose interest (but it seems fish density is not that great). One peculiar thing this year, is that there are almost no rises, even early morning or sundown. A few times I have stayed well past sundown, and have seen the space over the water dense with mayflys (cream cahills recently i think) and caddis (always caddis during the day too). I always turn rocks over and use the net to take samples from the bottom, and there is always a ton of little nymphs and big stone flys. Any guess as to why the dry fly fishing is so bad?? Sorry for the long post for a short question-Cliff
