A Cold December Morning

It seemed like a good idea on Saturday night - get up at 5am Sunday morning and hit the Swift for a few hours. It didn't sound so good when the alarm went off so I ended up buying an extra hour of sleep which resulted in me crossing over the Rt9 bridge at 7:40 instead of the planned earlier hour. Everyone else must of had the same idea/excuse because the Y Pool parking lot was EMPTY!! So was the Pipe lot too!! I guess a sunrise temperature of 14 degrees will do that! Anyway, I had the place to myself from 8 to 9am coaxing a few reluctant bows to the net with serendipities and Marla's jailbird (a very good fly). At 9am George and this other gent made an appearance. The action (?) was slow for all of us. I took four by 10am when I decided to call it quits.

The fish are there but they were like me at 5am. Not in the mood!! Maybe we can get a 50 degree day before our licenses run out.

Merry Christmas!!

I waited until around 1:45 to hit the pipe..a balmy 28 degrees. George was back, and just before I stepped into the river, he hooked into a very heavy rainbow.
I almost immediately had 2 "quick releases" using a pink san juan worm. Eventually landed a couple nice bows and a small brown. Only a couple of fishermen and then only for short periods of time.I actually witnessed, for my first time, the famous "pellet hatch". The fish became active and were all over the top. I tied on my pellet fly (courtesy of Dan Trella)
and had a few hits...but didn't land any.
All in all, a good day on the Swift.

Tom,

George and the other gent were both using SJ worms in a brown color. When I do use them it's either in red or your pink color. Glad that you got to see the "pellet" hatch. It's amazing to see how many trout that event brings up!!

T - Good to meet you too and Merry Christmas also!! Have a good New Year!

I was there about noon Sunday. Hiked between y-pool and pipe. Fishermen everywhere (11 at or around the y-pool !). Had 2 bows down by the 'duck pond', a couple more below the bridge and one at the crib dam. None of any size to speak of, but a nice warmup never the less.
Odd thing was their reaction to a beadhead nymph's plop in the calm water, they would come from all directions.
Merry Christmas fellas.

Scott,

You fished from the duck pond to the crib dam and caught fish. Probably more than the Y Pool crowd. Good for you to take the "path less chosen". There are a lot of fish there that don't see a lot of fly casters!!

Ken,

the duck pond was half frozen but there were still trout milling around the edges of ice.

I also picked up a pre-adolescent brookie in a pool across from what looks like a heron rookery? Odd place to cage a fishing bird - on the banks of a heavily stocked trout stream ! Have you seen this ? It's just above what I believe is the crib dam, although my coordinates may be misplaced.

Scott,

Caging a heron is against the law!!! The "duck pond" has had resident (caged) waterfowl for years but I always thought that they were someones pets! This is very strange but I believe you. I'll take a look at it.
