Don't Trust The Gauge!!

I hit the "Pipe" at 7:15am just like a week ago. Water was just barely covering that metal tube, again, just like a week ago but the gauge is reading a flow in the HIGH 400's today while last week it was in the mid 300 cfs range. The electronic gauge must be off. The Pipe will be my gauge going forward. That high reading may be the reason why I fished alone for two hours before the next guy showed up.

That high reading was the reason that I took along two size 12 marabou streamers to try out. The tiny marabou streamers did the early morning trick. Six bows smashed them on the drift with four landed. Next came the reliable Hot Spot which took another six with a few throwing the hook.

There is a lot of action above RT 9 dealing with the "spillway salmon". I'll fish for them but not during the weekend. Too many people. Maybe that's why the Pipe was all mine this morning.

To all of you - Have a Happy Thanksgiving!!!!

Ken,

The Millers at Erving seems to be slowly coming back down to reality...what's your opinion there with fishing in Early December if the flows get down to say +/- 400 or so... NEED to get a few good fishing days in before the end of the year and the next two weeks im literally scheduling bathroom breaks.... So it looks like the first or second week of December for me. I'd like to spend one day on the Millers.

If the flows continue to drop then go for it. 400cfs would be nice. Anything much above that and you start getting into heavy flies and sinking lines which I don't like to use very much.

I was one of those people who didn't hit the Swift because of the guage.

So you recommend 400 cfs for Erving as a Miller's indicator?

I took 3 nice Rainbows swinging bead head streamers through the pools on the Nissitissit. It's fishing quite well now, saw a few BWO's around. First snow will bring on those bugs for a week or so.

Falsecast,
I fished out of Wendell Depot in July pushing 500 and it was comfortable wading...then again I'm used to steeldeading in 1800cfs lol but yeah 400 on that run is manageable with a good drift, even up to 600 if your experienced....or anxious

Had an hour and a half to kill so decided to hit the Millers today..fished from 3:10-4:10...Orcutt Brook section.
Missed 2 downstream on beadhead bugger and muddler...landed 2 nice rainbows (15+ inches) just above the bridge on buggers...river still high, but fishable...cold....

I ended up making it to the Bears Den Saturday late morning. Water was at 550, left the waders in the car and fished from some of my favorite perches etc..working the softer, deeper seams along the edges with a streamer loaded with weight and flash. Took four browns and a rainbow in acouple hours, all seemingly from the Fall stocking. Was some good fun. Took a walk way down along the tracks to a spot where I knew some pigs were living as the summer got warmer in hopes I could coax them in November but no such luck, oh well, the scenery was fantastic as always. Cheers

I Like the tease the Millers gave us yesterday.....660's on the guage...then came the rain....and were back up well over 1200cfs

Insert explurvitive here....

Ken,
What style of hook do you use for all those small micro nymph patterns on the swift? I have never tired anything smaller than a size 18. And my size 18 hot spots and serendipity were done on standard dry fly hooks. I was wondering if I should use a heavier hook to get them down faster.

Happy Thanksgiving,
Mike

Did the flow really go way up today on the Swift? I know the gauge is off, but it looks like around midnight last night it spiked even higher.

The swift was definitely high today. With my 6'2" frame, I can usually wade the stretch between the bridge and Cady lane with no problem. Today, I had to hug the shoreline a couple times. Regardless of the high water, the fishing was fantastic. They were only taking flies presented in the middle/lower water column for me...so streamers and nymphs were doing the trick. Caught about 13 total with a bunch more missed. I haven't fished the upper section in 6 months due to all the cars parked near the bridge. I wonder how the fishing has been up there?!?! Maybe once the cold sets in and the ice and snow arrive, the crowds will die down and I'll venture up that way.

The gauge said that the Swift was approaching 700 cfs yesterday. It's high but not that high. It's very fishable right now. LL Salmon are all over the place even as far as the PIPE. A week or so ago they were hitting streamers and WB's. Now it's eggs and soft hackles.
