Millers Update - September 2012

The Millers is back!! As you have read over the last few posts this river's browns survived a hot dry Summer and are now actively feeding. It's not going to be easy as it was last Spring. On Saturday I guided a gent and we worked a pod of browns on the lower C&R that were rising in a 30ft x 10 ft section. They refused everything!! It was fun and is a hint of what is to come. September and October is great on this river!! Don't miss it!!

I had a similar experience on the Millers Thursday evening: a half-dozen big browns, rising sporadically, and taking nothing attached to a tippet. It was a pleasure to be tangling with snotty browns on the Millers again.

Does anyone know how the EB is fishing lately? I guess they'll throw a bunch of dumb rainbows in this week if they haven't already.

Sporadic rises to a light BWO hatch on Saturday. I broke off one brown and that was that. The millers will be stocked soon- this week. The EB - who knows.

Down by the Pipe around noon today, I was surprised to connect with more than one tiny brook trout. Four or five inchers; the tiniest body had those par-type light and dark shadows over the perfect red and blue dots. Immaculate, and probably native. They made my day more than the few stock bows that responded to a variety of offerings. Beautiful fall outing.

Bob, I hooked up w/ a few of those this weekend as well. Some small, par marked, bows as well. Actually had a Swift hat trick yesterday, which was pretty cool, even though the brown and brookie weren't big enough to get the net out for. & yeah, the rainbows were responding to a wide variety of offerings all weekend. Think I brought 10 to the net in total and had another 7-8 either spit it or break off.
The real joy though, came from getting my brother in-law into the water for his 2nd and 3rd times fly fishing ever. First day, Saturday, he hooked into his first fly caught trout ever, and it was a beaut brookie with great coloring. About an hour later his first bow, and it was a chunker to boot. Sunday he brought two really nice bows to the net, the second of which broke some gearing in his brand new reel. Those "starter sets" definitely weren't put together w/ those types of fish in mind.
The guy's hooked now and it's an awesome feeling to be able to give, and introduce, that experience to someone.
A beautiful fall outing for sure!

Ken, Any idea if the Swift has had a visit from the stocking truck to freshen-up the trout supply?

Ken,

Is the C&R on the lower river Fly Fishing only? Reason I ask is that I'm taking my nephew fishing and he's not entirely sold on fly fishing though I am slowly bringing him along. We had some good luck earlier this summer up in Royalston but were looking for some new water.

Many thanks as always,

Scott

If you are talking about the Lower Millers C&R (or the upper C&R in Royalston for that matter), the answer is No, its not Flyfishing only, but it is C&R with artificial lures only, no worms or bait. both C&R areas on the Millers River were stocked on Thursday

Fished the Bear's Den on Friday and except for the new stocked fish just below the red house (can't remember the pools name, we only had a couple of fleeting strikes. Somewhere the bigger fish have got to come out and have a chat.

Fished Wendell section Sunday sans nephew (2 cold 2 early - teenagers!) and netted a bunch, mostly stocked 'bows save 1 brookie and 4 browns including 1 Brown that broke my 4X around a rock pile on the bottom of the pool. I didnt get a real good look at him but he was on my drag immediately and never stopped taking line. I couldn't even turn his head ! How big could a holdover get in the Miller's ?

Scott M - Many thanks for the reply I appreciate that.

Ken - Many thanks for the blog and my dog-eared river guide and the insights and...
