August On The EB

The EB has survived the July heat waves and I mean really survived. The browns and 'bows are still there and are being taken in the evening and the early morning hours on the surface and below it. This week daytime temperatures will stay in the 70's with nighttime temps in the low fifties. This river will cool off and stay cool.

Fish the EB. It's worth it!!

Ken, great news. Any word on how the Millers is doing in the Roylason area? Thanks in advance.

That's one beautiful brown.

tbooth,

I haven't fished the Royalston area since early June so I really don't know.

Bob O,

That's an EB brown of about 16 inches. There must be something about that river because the browns turn golden in that water.

Ken, I assume that's the gorge section. BTW, in your new photo, I am assuming that is what you call Slant Rock pool. I fish there a lot too, but don't know it by that name.

How do you think the main stem of the westfield is fishing these days? Does that hold up in summer? I usually hit that section (under mass pike, etc.) only in spring.

I'd like to get out, but right now it looks like the Swift, and the crowds, is the only choice.

Falsecast,

That photo was taken at the Bliss Pool.

Slant Rock Pool - that name can apply to dozens of spots on the EB and that's why I chose it for one really nice spot. I'm sure many have fished it and I'll probably pinpoint it out in the near future.

Funny, I call the "Bliss Pool", "Flat Rock".

I doubt there is a need to pinpoint it as you said there are many "slant" rocks. Finding your spots is a big part of the fun.

I am always interested in what a "real" name of a pool is based on it's history and what people called it a long time ago. I bascially have a host of names I give spots, but they are just made up in my head. "Tree pool", "big rock", "Mass Pike", etc. You seem to have a good grasp on the real names. Thanks.

I have a good grasp of the names of pools and runs on the Millers because I researched by asking what was left of the old timers who fished that river before 1953 when they stopped stocking. The Gorge Pool is one, the Kempfield is another. Those names go back to the 1930's. Unfortunately some locals, without any clue to local fly fishing history, are trying to relabel these places with names that regulars of decades ago would never recognize. My Millers Guide corrects that.

The EB is another story. I spoke to many who have fished that branch and the ONLY named pool I could come up with was the Hemlock Pool 10 minutes below the yellow gate. He was an old timer and he said that was the name. I call it the Hemlock Pool.

I write about the Bliss Pool and call it that because it is across from a sign that says "Bliss State Park". If anyone knows it, or others, as another name and that name goes back a few decades I'd like to know.

Trout streams have their legacy. We should preserve the original names.

Keep the traditions alive Ken! I have heard the pool on the lower EB (about 1 mile before the dam) called the "Rainbow Pool" for what it's worth.

Falsecast,

There's a spot not far below "Indian Hollow" (where TU has there annual May outing)that may be called, if I remember, the Rainbow Pool. Nice pool!! Above Indian Hollow there is a gorge that again, if I remember, may be close the size of the gorge far upstream.

Here we are in the 21st century talking about parts of a river that may or may not exist right here in Massachusetts!!!
