One Day - Two Rivers

7:00 am on the Saturday Morning and there are NO cars at the Y Pool parking lot on the Swift. There are three cars at the PIPE parking lot as I suit up at 7;15. The PIPE section is crowded (three cars will do that) so I work my way downstream to the Gauge and pick up two bows until I work around one angler at the PIPE.

I fished the tree pool, brake off one, land one, and catch 4 tiny brookies that went for my size 22.

Time to hit the EB!!

Went home, made soup and a sandwich and the headed west and had the EB to myself. I felt that after the good reports I had to show something. This place amazes me. This beautiful river is full of trout. I took 6 in the hour and a half that I was there. It really is the best freestone river that I write about!!!

One Note - A very REGULAR fly fisher (he is very good) said that the trout have left the Y Pool. I found him below the IPE WHERE HE IS SELDOM found.

A word to the wise!!

The fish disappeared from the upper swift last year too, but I think it occurred much later in the winter (the spillway was covered with ice). Not sure of the reason for the mass exodus, but I would guess lack of food might have something to do with it. Hopefully the fish haven't been poached.

The fish have not been poached. We would have known that. I caught many trout above rt 9 last year but have not fished that section since early October. I can't believe that they went downstream as I have heard. Why go downstream when the Y Pool can "winter over" trout like it usually does.

Left to discussion.....

I believe I seen you Ken as I was leaving the EB today, Black SUV ~ 2 pm. I was up early this morning and contemplated, "Swift or EB." I briefly thought of last weekend when I, and half of Hampshire Co. was below the pipe, and remember your comment from a previous post "Fish the EB before it freezes." Off to the EB I went, and boy it was hot - not outside that is for certain. The trout were really on! I had to break twice to warm up the feet and hands. I traveled further towards Knightsville than I usually do because the second gate was open and it was worth it. I worked a deep pool with a green wooly bugger and was able to trick about 20 before I decided I was cold enough. Wind was fast today, I almost didn't recognize you without the hat!

Terry,

Yes, that was me and it was too cold for the usual hat. You must of hit the Hemlock Pool which has been doing well too.

I'd like to hit the EB one more time before the snow flies. Maybe next weekend.

There a few otter that come out as the fishing slows down in the cold months and I think they probably help push fish out or get their fill
