The Millers And The Swift

Spent a few hours Saturday afternoon on the Millers with my girlfriend in tow. She's a beginner but shows real promise even though she did fall in. Took three browns on dries. I think I'm becoming a purist!!!!
Hit the Swift at the "pipe" early this morning to check out the new low flow. The water temp. was 62 degrees at 6:45 which seems to say that the water is still coming from the spillway. Fished for an hour and took a small rainbow. I saw nobody until I was leaving.
It's not the same river that we are familiar with. Let's hope things get back to normal soon.
The above photos are: girlfriend, bad shot of me with a brown, a brown on the business end of the leader.

Went out for the first time on the Millers Sunday evening from Cambridge. Well, first hit the W branch of the Swift which was fun. Then shot over near the Wendell Bridge by 7pm. LOVED it. I had a few hookups with nice rainbows using nymphs, landed one. Saw little/no dry action but that was ok with me. Damn did I miss out on some nice water when I went to Umass. LOVE your blog, found it a month ago and it forced me to get out there. Next trip to the bear's den!

Thanks for the good words about the blog. Next time you're on the Millers check out the section above the Wendell Bridge just about the RR trestle. the Upper Trestle Pool is a great place.

The WB of the Swift - have you fished it in the Fall for the landlocked salmon runs?

Looking at a satellite image, it looks like the RR crosses twice right near the Wendell bridge. Is upper trestle pool just upstream of one of these crossings, or is it a ways more upstream?

Never fished the WB of the swift before last weekend...but for years I've been thinking about fishing it in the fall for LLS.

PS where's the kempfield pool you're always writing about. In the same area?

Of the two crossings near the Wendell depot it is the one more up stream not far upstream from the parking area. It is not fasr at all. There is good fishing up and down from that stretch from the Holtshire Bridge in Orange to Farley Flats in Erving.

The trestle that is upstream from the Wendell Depot parking area is the start of the upper trestle pool. the pool is on the right (upstream) from the trestle. the lower trestle is the start(downstream) of the Kempfield section.

Hey Ken, any idea if you think the streams will be down to fishable levels by Sunday? Not sure how long it takes all that rain to get washed away...

Thanks

Ken,

I heard recently that unfortunately the Bubbler on the Swift is going to be down for repairs until at least late July/Early August, so looks like we can expect the river to continue warming until then as everthing will be coming from the spillway. Hopefully the Swift will be back by the Fall trout stocking, but until then I fear we might have to break out the bass poppers ...
