Hendricksons Everyware, AN OPEN DATE 5/5 And A River Update

"There is no more anticipated event in all of eastern fly fishing than the Hendrickson hatch" Thomas Ames Jr. Hatch Guide for New England Streams
Folks - I just got a cancellation for Friday, May 5th. First one who claims it gets it!!!!!!  Email Me!!!!!

You could see them before you made it to the river. Pulsing clouds of female Hendricksons, eggs sacs attached, all moving upstream and trout beginning to work the surface. This is what we live for unless we can't stop nymphing. It resulted in fish being caught on CDC emerger surface patterns and a brownish soft hackle that has a yellow egg sack on the tail. Expect the egg carrying females in the evening and newly hatched duns by early afternoon. I am confident that you will find this action all over the Ware.
Water levels are slowly dropping.

By now everywhere has been stocked and some streams have been dropping into the fishable zone except the Millers which is still above 700 cfs. There is some light at the end of the tunnel here because the flow in the Bears Den is only half the flow down in Erving. In short, almost every place is fishable!!!

You folks have made me a every busy guide this year = Thank You!! I still have some slots open from now through June so grab them up.

First time fishing this year. First time on the squanacook yesterday afternoon. Lots of mayflies and stoneflies hatching and a very few small risers around 230pm but had to leave early for home. Fished upstream from parking lot and gound the river slow amd deep. Is the river downstream more dynamic and trouty? Btw - Flex seal wader repairs over the winter held tight! Yeah!!

Ken,

Went to the Swift on Friday. What a crowd!!!! Way too many people to make it enjoyable in the usual popular places so I moved around. Got some elbow room and caught two rainbows. You are certainly right about trying new spots on a river.

Chico,

Upstream from what parking lot? Years ago I fished it from start to finish so I don't know what area you're talking about.

Jack,

Good Move!

Quit work an hour early, with a weighted pheasant tail nymph and scud for a dropper. Action was as good as it gets. Props to the DFW for the trout they stock. Each and every one were beautiful and fought like crazy. All were released for future action.

Despite the insect hatch taking place, not many trout were rising, A few were though, and parachute adams drifted near the zone got a hit. Brook trout always seem to partake of the hatches on this stream. The stocked trout don't seem to get it, but I think they will learn soon enough.

Fished the Millers at Royalston today......river running a little high, but a good hatch of hendricksons(?) coming off. Caught a peck of dace, but nary a trout. Then it was off to Bondsville......had a couple of strikes on a peasant tail but I was too slow on the set (then switched to a pheasant tail, but no takers). After I put a 1" gash in my waders the day was over. Advice, when Google Maps routes you on to a dirt road......ignore, and seek to REROUTE!

needed to fish after chasing turkeys for a couple of days. Did not want to go to the Ipswich river which they stocked this last week so I hit the parker and shawsheen river. No other fisher since these were stocked 3 weeks ago. The parker had many herring going to the up most pond to spawn ggot a nice brookie on a hares ear. But when to the andover section of shawheen and got several rainbow below the horn bridge on a wood duck wet with yellow trailing shuck. Again no one at this location. Really strange no hatches. Worked for the fish but very enjoyable because I was alone except for a few snapping turtles and geese. All in central and western areas enjoy because in the northeast trout wise only one small stocking. But shad and striped bass are starting to show. WILL GIVE UP DATE WHEN IT GETS HOT.

The Swift area I fish was a bit busy today, but as always I find a zone that is to my own and liking.

A very slow stretch that I always wanted to fish. Pheasant tail nymph and a scud dropper got interest. Pulled once in a while and drifted. The hits were hard to detect, but a few netted today.

Chico,

Thanks for the BD report and even Flex-Shield can't fix that rip!! Possible rubber patch covered with Flex-Shield???

Sam,

There is a herd instinct in play at the Swift. Good that you're not a victim of it!

Hey Ken,

I had the Ware R in Hardwick to myself this afternoon. Rain ended, temps rose from mid-40's, hatch started & fish were rising everywhere.
