INTRODUCTION - NYMPHING IS BAIT FISHING WITH AN ARTIFICIAL: Nymphing is considered by beginning flyfishers as an
expert form of flyfishing. Yet for many of you, who are
making the change from spin fishing,it should be the most
familiar form of fly fishing. Most spin fishers began
as bait fishers. If you were any good at it, you learned
some of the skills necessary for successful nymphing.-

This little respite from the Game of Thrones "North" which is New England is coming to an end. The last two weeks in Melbourne Florida have been great with countless bluefish, spanish mackerel, pompano and others being landed and eventually put on the grill (it's ok to eat fish). My fishing has not been for glamour species like bones, tarpon or even redfish mainly because two of the three don't live in these waters at this time of year and I wanted to be as informal as possible which means "open the door, take 50 steps and start fishing". This is Gierach's bohemian lifestyle minus the trout!
My favorite saltwater fishing is right in the surf and early mornings, especially at low tide, have been great. The gear is low tech (on purpose) and the flies are simple. As I said in the previous post I'm experimenting with freshwater hooks (nickel plated) and testing the corrosive properties. The photo is of a small deceiver style fly tied on a size 4 3X freshwater streamer hook LAST YEAR! It caught dozens of stripers last year, was put away without rinsing and then used this month until the blues ripped it up, The steel is still strong!!!!
Soon to be retired fly (very simple)
The fly is dirt simple to tie: crystal flash wrapped on the body (glue this if fishing for blues), white craft fur with a little crystal flash mixed in. There was a spin fisher casting a lure with so-so results. I tied on the above fly to the tail of his lure with two feet of 15lb mono and he ended up with his first "fly caught" fish!!!!
Trip bookings for this Spring have really picked up. June is filling up. Don't get left at the dock!!!
Well, another 80 degree day to put up with and then the slow job of packing for the trip home. Ir better be warm in Massachusetts!

Ken,
That fly still looks good enough to fish!

I think it's spring! The rivers seem low enough which is strange after all this snow.
GW
Anonymous 9:42 and GW,
It will be interesting to see how the rivers made out after the ice dams of January, especially the Ware!
