The Millers - Finally!!!!
It was fun to finally throw something much larger than something in the size 20 range. The Swift served me well over the winter BUT it was time to cast something "normal" like a 5wt and a fly with some heft to it. The Millers has been dropping and on Sunday morning made it's way into the 500 cfs range. Good enough!!
This trip was more of a scouting expedition. I hit four sections on the lower river and managed four of the 'bows that the DFW gives us. The fishing pressure was light with Wendell Depot having about four other anglers. The trout that I caught seemed to be holed up in certain areas. You would fish a section hard and get nothing, move 15 feet and then start getting hits. that's early season fishing on this river!!
Tomorrow is May 1st. By mid May the browns will go in and the real fishing will start. The 'bows will keep you happy until then.

ken...is that a millers picture....that looks like a brand new bridge...where was photo taken?
(if u don't mind sharing)
Indeed! The Ware's finally wadeable and has been producing for me the past few days (Thursday-Monday). The fish haven't moved too far from the stocking points, but they're hitting the usual offerings, and are slowly moving up stream. The water's still a bit high, but workable.
I noticed the same thing Ken. They're holding together in certain areas, where just a few feet to either side won't produce hits.
One thing I've noticed, of pretty much every fish hooked, is that they're giving a heck of a fight. I don't know if after a long winter I'm just used to the short fights of the Swift 'bows, or if the high flows after being dumped into the river has had an effect, but the fish seem stronger.

I am venturing a guess that pic is the Bridge Street pool in Erving. Couldn't resist taking a shot. Looking forward to a season on the Millers.
Ken, I love the photo. Holds lots of mystery - big brown? spunky bow? smallie? or fat sucker? (they've been real big this year) Keep up the good work.
Pete, I wonder if you were the first one to sting them with a hook, and thus the reaction. I've nicked a few in the Swift like that as well. Or maybe they were overwintered stock that know how to rumble.

Excited to get out this weekend with a few friends to hit the Millers, Deerfield and Green.
I was wondering if anyone has hit the Deerfield or Green thus far and if they have been productive.
Thanks,
Mike
Maybe Bob. A couple were pretty dark and chunky and others didn't show wear and tear on their mouths. I'd be willing to bet that the few I was able to fool upstream from the dumping spot were first timers.
After taking a second look at that pic, I've gotta agree w/ John. That bridge may look new from that angle, but once you get there you realize that it's far from it. Especially when a vehicle comes across that you're unaware of from the Rt.2 side. I've come two-feet outta the water a couple of times w/ a start!

Hi Mike,
The Deerfield was excellent on Sunday. Fished it from dawn to dusk, mostly caught fat recent stockie rainbows, but the holdovers and browns were there too, just in less abundance. Lots of worm dunkers out killing their "fair share" on the general regs. sections. Luckily, all the ones I saw killed were recently stocked, pale rainbows. The water was a bit too cold for any rising fish, but there was a cream-ish midge hatch and some bigger dark caddis. I'll be down again all day Sunday, totally worth the drive and the flows are great right now. Check out 2oline.com/255123.asp for flow info.
Yup, it's Bridge St. In Erving.
Bob O, You left out being hung up on the bottom!! Actually it as a rainbow.

Thanks NH4weight,
Can't wait to get out there!
Have a great weekend.

Hi Ken,
Great picture. Just got back from the Housy today which is in full swing Hendrickson hatch action. I agree, that leaving the Swift alone is refreshing. Fishing 5X with tandom weighted nymphs (Size 12 Hares' Ear with a 16 PT) is all it took for 6 fish 14 - 17. This time of year you can fish all stages of this hatch if you want. Only Browns.
Also have been spending time at the Nissitissit in both NH and MA and have taken some nice fish. The bugger blitz has shut off in the past weeks and the fish are on the real stuff.
I know this is a Miller's forum, but in the past you've encouraged all updates. I look forward to continue to discover the Miller's this month.
Falsecast,
It's always good to hear about the other rivers especially the Housy - the sister river of the Millers. Both have the same history of problems and both are brown trout rivers but the Housy seems to be managed better.
