Merry Christmas

"Funny but nymph rods seem to have encountered an epidemic of breakage but the ultra long and ultra slim Tenkara rods seem to have avoided this. Maybe because you find very few weighted flies in the Tenkara world and weighted (bead heads in particular) flies are rod killers." Me

I guess that this December is one for the books. Unbelievable high water (and unbelievable LL Salmon) and REAL cold weather made this month one for the books. More unneeded rain today will blow up the Swift but that will not stop me from wringing out the last few hours on my fishing license. It's funny but my clients and I took more salmon when the flow was approaching 700 cfs then with this "calm" flow of 400+.Anyway, if you are curious about the "LL's" in the Swift just contact me and book a trip.

Thought I'd throw in a photo of the EB on a late afternoon in mid Summer.  It seems so far away. We fish through the Winter but we know what we really like.

Merry Christmas and Peace to all!

Ken

Tincup,

Merry Christmas to you also. You are right that if it's not challenging it's really not worth doing. It's been a challenging Autumn!

Merry Christmas Ken. See you on the water. Perhaps 'the challenge' is why I appreciate trudging through snow in February on a warm (34F), sunny, windless day to encounter leftover stockbows. All I know is that it's a blast! Happy fishing.

Bob,

I do the same and I like it but while doing it I'm dreaming of Hendricksons and sulphurs. It's only natural!

Merry Christmas Ken. Warm weather and lack of snow has extended our fishing season out here in Montana, but I'd sure like to be fishing for those Salmon on the swift right now. I remember throwing blue egg sack patterns for hours and catching large salmon and lake trout.

I want to say thank you for the blog you have here. When I started to search for New England based fly fishing pages, yours was one of the first on the list to appear. Since finding it, I have not looked back. It is a daily stop on my web browsing and I look forward to the tidbits of knowledge and wisdom found here.

On another note I wanted to ask what others thoughts were on the "TROUT" magazine article about the Whitlock-Vibert box. Is it used in Mass. or other New England states? Any knowledge if it is a success? Etc.

Merry Christmas to you Ken and all of your readers.

Kozman,

It's been close to a decade since you WENT WEST! The next time you HEAD EAST let me know. We need to fish together!

Toss Neale,

Thank you!! I believe the Whitlock-Vibert box was used on the Housatonic River in CT years ago. Last that I have heard of it. It seemed that it had a lot of promise! Merry Christmas!

Lenny,

I'm saving a spot for you on the Swift if you come back early. No fee required!!! Tell me some big trout tales to get me through March!!!!!!!

Merry Christmas Bud!!

Merry Christmas to everyone, today the 25th I went on a walk to the dam with the family so of course I had to bring my 3 weight and tied on an orange blob fly with 2 split shot about 6 inches above it. I caught 3, 12+ inch rainbows within 30 minutes. Another fly that has been doing it for me is a very small beadhead white wooly bugger.

Will it still be there come mid April???

Here’s a story for you- fished a river just down the hill from the lodge and hooked a 16” brown off a near side high bank and after a few seconds an easy 24” + brown peels off trying to eat it. The smaller fish jumped and this thing dolphin dives out of the water chasing it then it left. It was the craziest thing I’ve ever seen. All in no more than 2 feet of water.

Lenny,

Wow, but let me ask a question. What size fly were you using because the same thing happened last month with the salmon on the swift. Hooked a salmon with a smelt streamer and this THING comes out of the depths and goes after the fly which I can still see hanging out of the first salmons mouth. Lost them both but it was a rush!!!

20 degrees here!

Size 6 fat Albert. I’m certain this fish didn’t have the fly in mind. The fish here inhale dries. I had a monster brown act like it was part of the Y pool crowd just ablut kiss my fly twice and then casually swam away. Fat alberts are the only fly you need in Patagonia!!
