July News

1.Someone must of been doing a mean rain dance because all the streams are up and very fishble.

2. Swift got stock 7/1 and if it's like last year it's 2000 from the dam to Bondville.

3. Pray for rain and cloudy, cool weather this weekend to keep the kayak crowd down.

4. Have a great 4th of July

I was on the Swift from 8.30am until 3pm yesterday at the pipe, crib dam, Rt 9 bridge, and Bondsville River Rd bridge. There were other fisherman in each area. No one saw a stocking truck. I did catch a few rainbows but on small nymphs and they were highly colored like not right from the hatchery. Stocking could have been late in the work day or maybe I just missed the right spots. 2000 trout are hard to hide.

More fish went in today. I heard the number 1400 - unsure if that is the total for the day, or for this season. Many compliant rainbows came to the net. No brookies (must be shell shocked from the latest infusion (or is it invasion?). Many fishers despite the rain. Glad for the cool weather. The steady rain will probably mean the Swift's flow will fall - good for those hunting surface sippers.
Tightlines.

Btown Jim and Bob O,

The dfw report says that the Swift was stocked on 7/1 and 7/2. Very few trout to be seen in the usual stocking spots. which may be due to the 117 cfs flow or maybe the trout are pulling another disappearing act like last year. I'll let the fish settle in before announcing a verdict.

I was on the Swift on Thursday, late afternoon and evening, and heard from other fishermen, including the locals, that it was stocked earlier but that a lot of the fish went belly-up (I don't know the exact number nor the cause - speculation was that it was the temperature change from the truck to the cold water or something with the oxygen in the tank), though attempts were made to revive them. That apparently was one reason DFW returned the next day.

The rainbows I caught that evening on tiny sulphurs did not appear to be stockies.

Herm,

Good to hear from you.

It may have been an oxygen level problem but that seems weird to me. The Swift was the only river stocked and it's a very short trip to the river. The river temperature yesterday was 56 degrees - perfect. Did the DFW return the next day because I didn't see them at all. If the trout went "belly up" how come we didn't see belly up fish?? There's so many questions involving the stocking of this river over the past two years that leave a lot of questions. Stocking seems to be a lot different over the last two years than in the past years. Why is the DFW shocking this river to find out where the trout are when that was not the case just a few years ago???

DFW - Any answers???????????????????

Based on the reports of ‘additional’ stocking on 7/2, I broke my Saturday rule and went back to the Swift from 8 to 11 am. Some of the same spots as Thursday. Plenty of new rainbows today although you had to have your spots right. I’d guess the majority of fish went in on 7/2

Ken, I caught a few stockies in Bondsville last evening and there really wasn't much fight in them. Most times the fresh ones fight like crazy being they're well fed and full of energy. Not sure if the lack of fight relates to what was mentioned in previous posts. I didn't see any dead ones.

"Attempts were made to revive them"? Maybe that's what the shocking is for. Lol.

Happy Fourth to you, Ken, and to all!

Cheers,
Dave P.

Short trip to the EB this morning was a success… the increased flows had the fish riled up and willing to fight, landed one good brown and lost a few more one that took me to the bottom of the pool and threw the hook in the rocks… it was nice to be out on the fourth fishing the EB happy fourth everyone!
