The Worst Spring

" Never approach a bull from the front, a horse from the rear, or a fool from any direction"-Steve Mathewson

Yes, some of the rivers are receding and some are not.  The Millers dropped 690 cfs in the last two days. At 2550 cfs it's in tough shape but heading in the right direction.

The Ware has dropped 156 cfs over the same time span and as I write it sits at 345 cfs which is fishable if you are a good and careful wader.

The EB and the Swift are a mess!!!

The great news is that there is no real RAIN in the forecast for the next week.

The higher elevations of the East Branch of the Ware (Princeton) are fishable. Went out today, but didn't bring a fish to the net. Basically I was prospecting for fishable water. While I was sitting on a guard rail, a car pulled off, and a man and his grandson crossed the road to where I was. He wanted to know if I minded if he asked some questions. Of course not. He and his grandson (maybe 13 years old) had traveled from Kentucky, because he was teaching his grandson how to fly fish and the boy had new waders. Their plan was to fish the Swift, which they found running at 10 times the normal rate. Someone recommended the East Branch of the Ware, and they found it on their GPS, just as I was sitting by the road. I directed them to a stretch where you could see the bottom all the way across, and the river was a bit wider and slower there. So, after years of taking the advice of much more experienced fly fishermen on this blog, I was happy to be able to "pass it forward." Hope they caught a fish.

Charles,
Good for you!! I know of some flyfishers who are totally tight lipped and would only tell those in their tight circle of any success that they have had, yet they will pepper you with questions about where to go and what to use. I have no use for people like that!!

Ken, you are correct about the area Rivers. In my daily work travels, I went out to Athol mass yesterday/Monday and the millers is Rip'n pretty good. I went Rt 2 east by that lower spot of the road where the river runs right there and man, its flowing pretty strong.
The Westfield has dropped pretty quick. I travel Rt 9 from Pittsfield area to Northampton fairly often, and I can see its fallen quite a bit. My River haunt, the Housatonic seems to take for ever to drop, so if the Westfield remains dropping with hopes of hitting it this weekend?
By the way, love the fly photos with the 2nd one looking very fishy......Phil

Good morning Ken, as it was for most of the last summer wading out to target seams with a good drift is just not possible right now. Time to break out the good ‘ol fashion wet flies and go with the across and down. Plenty of weight or a sink tip and mending to slow the flies down. Wade out only as far as it’s safe to do so and let a long fly line do the rest. It’s old school and maybe a little horrifying to the euro nymph crowd but it does work.

Charles,
I remember the first time that happened to me - it's definitely a moment. I'd been flailing around central MA for about 5 years, finally hitting my stride (with reassurance from Ken that I was doing it right, just needed to 'fish where there's fish'). One morning I was rigging up near the Quinnie and a kid was stringing up a clearly brand-new setup. He asked me if the fishing was good here, what flies, etc. I was stunned to realize how much I had learned and was suddenly in a position to give solid advice. Nice to pay it forward.
Light winds & rising fish,
Kevin
