The Swift????

"Gag flies are the fly-tying equivalent of rubber vomit. Sooner or later most tiers break down and make one, realize it's nowhere near as funny as they thought it would be and never make another." John Gierach

The July 1st stocking of the Swift below Route 9 can be considered stingy at best. Now, I've been fishing this section for over 30 years and I just fail to see the normal number of "July 1st" trout. Looking down the embankment of the Tree Pool one would seem dozens of trout. Now it's a dozen, maybe. Granted, I don't like to see schools of trout all in one spot but instead like to see SOME trout. Maybe we have gotten used to ultra heavy numbers of fish instead of a number that fits the size of the stream. When you think about it the number of fish we have now is probably the normal amount for a stream of that size.

One thing that is nice is that crowds are GONE. 10 to 15 anglers from the Pipe to the end of the Tree Pool was a normal weekend occurrence in July. Today I saw a total of 4 from 8am to 11am. It made for a lot of elbow room which was refreshing. Cady Lane was empty and it was great. Now we have to work for our fish and that's ok with me.

We Need Rain

There, I said it. Right now we are (except for the Swift) about at the average flow for the rivers that I fish. That's ok but the last 2 weeks have been dry and I just hope that it's not the start of something BAD. One inch of rain every 7 to 10 days would be great!!!

P.S. There are a lot of brookies below Route 9

P.S. Again - Friend Gary saw and got the license plate for someone ripping up the C&R signs on the EB.  It's a blue pickup truck. Keep an eye out for this guy!!!

Fished the Swift twice this past week. Caught some nice fish, bow, brown, and brook in spots that are often passed by. Saw two browns in the four to ten pound range looking like submarines. Definitely not as many fish appear to have been stocked this year. A sulpher hatch was coming off pretty well on Friday afternoon but they were only prey to smallish brookies. I think the Swift fishes better in the early afternoon than later in the day as the rise ended around six thirty but the flies were still hatching. Georgous brook trout in you photo but the way!

Millers watershed got about an inch and a half this afternoon and evening. Back up to just under 300 cfs at the Bridge Pool meter.

Chico,

I've seen those submarines also.

Charles,

I watched that storm roll off to the north of me. We still need the rain.

Hi Ken,

Hit the Swift a few times over the holiday weekend. I completely agree with your post in that it seems like very few fish were stocked. Although I did manage to get a few nice fatties below route 9, it still seems like they are all stacked up in a few spots. I’d love to see them spread out a bit more.

Also fished the bubbler and saw a decent number of 20”+ LLs. Talked to a fellow fisherman and we noticed one of signs up there says “Catch and Release Artificial Lures Only” instead fly fishing only. I’m talking about all the way up into the bubbler near the dam. Curious to hear you thoughts.

Best,

Jared

Jared,

Someone REALLY screwed up with the "artificial lures only" sign. It's FLIES ONLY, CATCH & RELEASE!!!! Did they put the signs up by mistake or did the regulations change and we didn't know about it? That takes a PUBLIC HEARING and there wasn't any so no regulations changed. Thanks for the info!!
