Enough Guiding

All good things come to an end.  I've been guiding on our great central Ma. rivers for about 15 years and I think it's time that I get to go fishing.  With a calendar that always points to "getting full" my days on the rivers were reduced to a few hours. I'm going to fix that!!!

Will I still be writing this blog?? OF COURSE! The blog is actually older than the guide business.  The blog will continue to give up-to-date info on the Millers, the Swift, the Ware and the Westfield system. It will also cover some new spots on old rivers that I just haven't had the time to fish enough to write about.  I'm fixing that too.

So, thank you for all your support and for the steady growth of this blog.  Keep reading and I'll keep writing!!

Ken

P.S. - I still sell flies and more of them in numbers and in pattern.

That's an understandable change Ken - enjoy the fishing! Cool thing about your guiding, is that if you want, you can do some in a year or you could just really cap #'s and guide 1x month or something.

Glad the blog will continue though!

Congratulations. Although I have been fly fishing since I was 17 and targeting 1 pound plus bluegills in South Carolina (1969), I date my "learning to fly fish" to your advice and willingness to share fly designs on your blog, which I started reading several years ago. The advice (and that of other readers) has greatly improved my game. Hope to cross paths on a river some day.

I hope all is all right with you, Ken. Sorry to hear your guide service is coming to an end. I hope I run into you in Bondsville, Quaboag, or Ware Rivers. You have helped many fishermen here with your blog and that includes me.

Best, Sam

Good for you, Ken! I've been lurking and reading your blog for several years and learned a lot. You have been generous with advice, observations and knowledge of the rivers. Definitely time for you to enjoy fishing and not have it be work all the time. Tight lines!

Charles,

1 pound bluegills??? I'd like one of those instead of a 12 inch clonebow!

Sam,

I don't regret it because I'll be fishing more. I hope I run into you some day.

Is this a “semi retirement”? If so congratulations! I wish I could say it in person but I’m not sure I’ll be able to afford to drive to the Swift or Ware for a while.

Reading your blog has become a daily ritual, Ken. Thanks for sharing so much information with the fly fishermen and fisherwomen of New England and beyond. I'm happy for you that you get more time to enjoy fishing yourself, but happy for the rest of us that we get to continue enjoying your blog. Hope to see you on the river soon.

Blessings,

Bill H

Ken,
I (and many others) want to thank you for guiding for all these years. You got me started on Swift River, showed me wet fly fishing, predicted I would tie my own flies, showed me great spots on the Millers and the EB. I have have directly many people getting started to hire you as a guide because I knew they would get off to a great start on this wonderful sport we all love. One of the things about fly fishing is that people always give back and help others.

Ken, congratulations on getting to fish more. You have sewn the seeds of fly fishing obsession, nurtured them as they took root, passed along your passion for the fish and the environment and now you can move along to enjoy your own quiet time on the water. I look forward to wetting a line with you sometime soon or at least sharing a few minutes as we work our way up and down the river.
Here's to rising fish and tight lines,
Gerry

Gerry, Thank you for the kind words and it would good to finally fish with you.

Wrong Day, good to hear from you. Your comments go back a long way.

Sam, the Swift flow went up from 60 cfs to about 130 cfs at the end of February. I haven't gone up to the Y Pool lately to see if the increase is due to a release or to overflow. A few years ago we had a Springtime overflow and we got pickerel and bass!!!

Congratulations on your decision to fish more. Always a wide decision!

Glad to hear you are giving yourself some well deserved ME time to pursue the old trout rivers
and streams that you have enjoyed in years past.I have enjoyed your columns for awhile now and am glad that you will continue writing for us all. I consider myself blessed to have access to your knowledge of your area and the memories you have provided me with each time I venture to your neck of the woods for a day in your beautiful area of our state.
