The EB, The Millers, The Swift And A Word To The Wise

There's more bullshit in fly fishing than in a Texas Cattle yard. - Lefty Kreh

It has been a great Fall so far in Central and Western Ma.  The river flows, as I write, are excellent. The Millers, which ran close to 800 cfs this Sunday is at 385 and the rain that is in the forecast is minimal.  The EB, which has been smoking this past week, is at 127 cfs.  Don't panic because we caught fish in flows from 40 cfs to 450 cfs in the last week. In fact the EB is full of fish from the Gorge to Les's Pool and beyond.  Our best fly this past Monday was my Possum nymph in sizes 14 and 16.

Speaking of Possum Nymphs

This little generic fly took 5 good bows and two brookies at the head of the Tree Pool on the Swift today. Again, size 14 and 16 did the trick.

Speaking of Low Water

Yes, they finally turned the faucet off  on the Swift AND this is not new news for Swift regulars. When a drought stricken CT River gets too low they open the Quabbin tap.  When the CT River goes up the tap is turned down.  It happens almost EVERY FALL!!!!!! It's not going to harm the trout in fact it gives the brookies better spawning conditions.  High water will keep them off the redds, low water doesn't.  You don't like low water? Then adjust your game. Pull yourself away from the Pipe and go far and fine.

A Word To The Wise

My client for the day sent me an email last night that he tested POSITIVE for Covid-19 and had to cancel.

Folks, this thing isn't going away soon regardless what the occupant of the White House says. My client took all the precautions but went on a trip and that's that!  Wear your masks, wash your hands, avoid crowds and don't listen to that stooge that resides at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.  Look what happen to him and his staff. (If you don't like what I say about that blowhard = TOUGH!!!)

When on the stream keep a fly rod's length from everyone. When shooting the shit after fishing keep your distance.  It's not hard and you have a better chance of not getting sick.

Book Me

We have through the Month of November to have great fishing.  BOOK ME!!!

My wife was hiking in the Quabbin today and learned the outflow was ‘shut off’ while staff tried to find their lost robot submarine in the reservoir. They were very worried about fish close to the y pool as flow was dead. I was fishing near the crib dam and assumed that the flow was turned down. What a surprise at 2.30pm when I almost got swamped as the high flow resumed!

I can think of at least 3 stooges in the white house.

Flyfishing has been the perfect social distancing activity for me this year.

Ken,

Said well - across the board.

Possum nymph... I'm blanking on what that looks like - photo of your version possible? I'm feeling like it's basically a dubbed possum body, and that's it - no fancy stuff... but cant remember.

Nice to see some HOH in those freestones!

Nothing political about a friendly reminder to becareful and put on a mask in the proper situations.Think of it as a public service annoucement!

Had a funny day on the swift on Tuesday. Couldn’t buy a bite doing my usual tricks all morning. Was out of ideas and decided to put on an egg under a microshot and fished it like a streamer with short tugs. Couldn’t keep them off of it. I even had Brookies chasing the egg on the retrieve. I suppose we are getting to that time of year

Ken, yes its your blog and you can do what you want. But I personally read your blog as well as others looking to mentally remove myself from politics as well as the every other daily grind.
You know sometimes you preach a lot with fly fishing on what you think you should and shouldn't do, but now your political preaching. Well by you stating and saying "if you don't like it Tough" Regardless of what side of the Isle you may sit on, I just dont think its the enjoyable tone I want to keep reading.

DRYFLYGUY and Others,

Environmentalism IS political. Certain politicians have always howled like scalded dogs whenever anyone tried to clean up the environment. When the Clean Air and Water act was passed in 1970 they predicted the end of our economy. It didn't happen and our air and water is cleaner now. It will always be a battle. Some anti environmentalists (guess who) will always try to spit in your soup!!

Ken - Good for you for warning about the virus and keeping distant! The Swift has been so packed, with 5 anglers in some spots, that it is good advice.

Remember the spawning brookies need us to stay off the Redds. The rainbows eat enough. I've been catching 10-12 inch beautiful Brookies below rte 9. Good time of the year. Happy Fall!

If you love fishing and the outdoors the environment has to be a huge consideration as well as public lands.

Falsecast and BobT,

I thank both of you. You GET IT!!! Fly fishing in a cold water environment is something we stand up for and want to protect. If one doesn't believe in that BUT still fly fishes for trout then stop and fish for horned pout, a nice tasting fish that can practically live anywhere!!
